A Brief History of Myrtle Beach SC

The area’s first inhabitants of the Myrtle Beach area were the Waccamaw and Winyah Indians, who named the region Chicora, which translates to “the land.” An old Native American trail ran through the area which became the route from the northern states to Charleston and Savannah. This is named the Kings Highway.

Myrtle Beach SC was eventually incorporated in 1938 and became a city in 1957. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel caused significant damage in the area, clearing the way for new hotels and homes. Ultimately the unique tourist destination that we see today was born of Hurricane Hazel’s destruction.
